Mammologist is a doctor who diagnoses, treats and prevents of diseases of the mammary glands. Recently, there has been a tendency to “rejuvenation” of breast tumor pathologies, so it is important to regularly visit a specialist for preventive examinations. When it is necessary to make an appointment with a mammologist

You should make an appointment with a mammologist in the following complaints:

• pain or discomfort in the mammary gland
• changes in breast shape and size
• abnormal discharge from nipples
• breast asymmetry
• enlargement and soreness of axillary lymph nodes

The above symptoms are characteristic of various diseases of the mammary glands. Some of them have a tendency to rapid development and severe course. It is important to consult a doctor immediately after the appearance of the first pathological signs.

Patients over 40 should visit a mammologist at least once a year for preventive purposes.

How is the mammologist’s consultation going

At the initial appointment, the mammologist listens to complaints, collects anamnesis of disease. During the conversation, you should inform the doctor about the intensity and nature of the symptoms, the time of their appearance, what relief  measures were taken and what their effectiveness is. 

Next, the doctor conducts an examination –  evaluates the shape, size, and symmetry of the mammary glands. According to the results of the examination, a preliminary diagnosis is determined  to confirm which various methods of laboratory and instrumental diagnostics are prescribed. In mammology the following types of examinations are used:

• general blood test
• blood test for tumor markers
• ultrasound of mammary glands and regional lymph nodes

The scope of diagnosis is determined individually. If necessary, a treatment plan is developed based on the results of the examination.
