Specifics of pregnancy management after IVF
Managing a pregnancy after IVF has certain particularities. They stem from a higher risk of pregnancy loss in the first weeks after embryo transfer and the need for additional hormonal support.
The main goals of pregnancy management are:
- prevention of infectious diseases of the pelvic organs
- early detection of multiple pregnancy
- reducing the risk of spontaneous miscarriage
- timely detection of fetal development abnormalities
After IVF the patient is followed not only by a gynecologist. Depending on the indications, she is referred to other specialists for consultation: a cardiologist, an endocrinologist, a neurologist and others.
Managing an IVF pregnancy by trimester
A scheduled check-up should take place every trimester. The scope of the examinations is chosen individually and with the gestational age in mind.
Throughout the pregnancy the complete blood count, the biochemical blood test, the urinalysis and the coagulogram are kept under control.
In the first trimester the tests include hCG measurement over time, an ultrasound of the pelvic organs and others. At our clinic the doctors put together the list of laboratory and instrumental tests that need monitoring after IVF.
In the second trimester an AFP test is added. Alpha-fetoprotein takes an active part in fetal development. Its level should match the age of the embryo from the moment of fertilization.
In the third trimester cardiotocography becomes available. CTG records the fetal heart rate and how active the baby’s movements are. CTG also shows uterine contractions and the baby’s response to them.
