Coffee and the Heart: How Many Cups Is Too Many?

Coffee and heart — woman with iced coffee and IV drip, Silk Medical
A morning without coffee? For many, that sounds like a bad joke. The first cup helps you wake up. The second gets you through the morning at work. After lunch, coffee saves you from drowsiness. In the evening, it becomes an excuse to meet friends. On the way home, you can’t resist grabbing a cold latte.

Coffee has long since ceased to be just a drink. It’s a habit, a ritual, and a little break in the middle of a busy day.

But this raises a question: Are we drinking too much coffee? And can it really harm the heart?

Friend or Foe?

For many years, the debate over coffee has raged on. Some consider it a healthy habit, while others are convinced that coffee is the cause of rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and heart problems.

So what’s the truth?

Current research shows that for most healthy people, moderate coffee consumption does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Some studies even link moderate coffee consumption to a reduced risk of certain heart and vascular diseases.

But this raises a natural question: if coffee is considered safe, why does the heart sometimes start beating faster after a cup?

To answer this question, we first need to understand how caffeine works.

Why does the heart start beating faster after drinking coffee?

It’s all about caffeine.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system. After drinking coffee, it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and temporarily boosts the body’s activity.

Therefore, after drinking coffee, a person may experience:

  • a surge of energy;
  • improved concentration;
  • a faster heart rate;
  • a slight tremor;
  • a feeling of internal tension;
  • a temporary increase in blood pressure in some people.

For most healthy people, these changes are short-lived and fade as caffeine leaves the body.

A rapid heartbeat after a cup of coffee does not in itself mean that the drink is harmful to the heart or causes disease.

We count the cups, but we forget to count the caffeine

When someone says: “I only drink two cups of coffee a day,” it doesn’t necessarily mean they get little caffeine.

The amount depends on the type of beans, the brewing method, the volume of the beverage, and the number of shots of espresso per serving.

Furthermore, caffeine isn’t found only in coffee.

Other sources include:

  • energy drinks;
  • black and green tea;
  • certain carbonated beverages;
  • chocolate;
  • and certain medications.

A person may consume much more caffeine daily than they realize.

So how many cups is too many?

For most healthy adults, up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is safe. This usually equals 3–5 cups of black coffee, though the exact amount depends on serving size and brewing method.

However, you shouldn’t base your intake solely on the number of cups.

If, after your second or third cup, you regularly experience:

  • a racing heartbeat;
  • tremors;
  • anxiety;
  • irritability;
  • insomnia;
  • severe discomfort,

this may mean that, for your body specifically, you’re already consuming too much caffeine.

In this situation, it’s a good idea to reduce your coffee intake or avoid caffeinated beverages in the afternoon and see if your well-being improves.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Not every instance of a rapid heartbeat is related to coffee.

If symptoms occur even without caffeine consumption and are accompanied by chest pain or a feeling of tightness in the chest, severe dizziness, loss of consciousness, or a sensation of irregular heartbeats, do not delay in consulting a specialist.

It’s also recommended to see a doctor if you experience these symptoms regularly, even after drinking just a small amount of coffee.

A doctor can help determine the cause of your symptoms and, if necessary, order tests.

The key is moderation

For most people, coffee can remain a part of their daily routine. The key is to practice moderation and be mindful of your body’s individual needs.

There is no one-size-fits-all number of cups that works for absolutely everyone. Therefore, it’s best to rely not only on general recommendations but also on how you feel.

If coffee doesn’t cause any discomfort and you don’t exceed the recommended amount of caffeine, there’s no need to give up your favorite beverage.

However, if you regularly experience a rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, severe weakness, or high blood pressure after every cup of coffee, you shouldn’t attribute all of these symptoms solely to coffee. Such symptoms may also be related to other conditions that require medical attention.

At SILK Medical, you can start with a consultation with a general practitioner or a cardiologist. If necessary, the doctor will order additional tests, such as an ECG, Holter monitoring (24-hour ECG recording), or other examinations that will help assess your heart function and determine the true cause of your symptoms.
